Congressman Jim Jordan (R-OH) is standing by his principles and elevating his stature with conservatives who are fed up with the “surrender first, talk about what we’ve accomplished” tactics of the Democrat-lite Republican leadership in both the House and Senate.
As the deadline for a possible “shut down” of the government by an Obama veto due to the defunding of Planned Parenthood draws near, Jordan isn’t backing down. He echoed the thoughts of many patriotic conservatives who have watched the misbehavior of both houses of Congress; that they give up without a fight at the earliest opportunity as a matter of routine.
In the fight against funding the macabre mutilation of babies by the “untouchable” Democrat golden child and fundraising organization, Jordan told the Daily Caller, “We haven’t made the case; all they hear is Mitch McConnell saying ‘We can’t win, this is a futile effort.’”
Over the past ten months or so it has become apparent that anything and everything that isn’t pre-approved by either Harry Reid or Hussein Obama, at least in private, off-the-record consultations, is a futile effort in the eyes of Mitch McConnell.
Jordan, the chairman of the conservative House Freedom Caucus, along with his caucus members and Ted Cruz in the Senate, are arguing that any shut down due to a battle over Planned Parenthood would be the fault of the all or nothing, my way or the highway Obama Democrats.
Jordan said, “I think the facts are the facts, Planned Parenthood has been shown on video to have engaged in activity that is just wrong, outrageous and terrible — that’s the key. It shouldn’t get your tax dollars.”
A spokesman for the ever-pessimistic Senate Majority Leader McConnell, Don Stewart, offered the recent theatrical exercises as “proof” that McConnell is doing everything he can and it’s just not possible for a majority party to have any input into the government.
He noted that McConnell brought an anti-abortion show vote to the floor on Tuesday, which, as would be expected, failed to pass. A vote on a continuing resolution which will defund the organization is scheduled for Thursday.
Stewart said, “Shutting down the government is a futile effort because it doesn’t defund Planned Parenthood.” The Daily Caller noted that as determined by a study by the nonpartisan Congressional Research Center, Planned Parenthood would continue to receive federal funding, including money from Medicaid, in the event of a shutdown.
That may be true, but that is off the point. The shutdown would be a temporary response to a decision to defund the organization. Once defunded by an act of Congress, excluded from appropriations, they’re defunded.
As for the argument that a government “shut down” is a political liability, Jordan noted that the shutdown of 2013 over Obamacare was followed by huge gains in 2014. The problem has been a lack of follow through on promises by the leadership in the time since the election.
He said, “I’m not saying what we did in 2013 helped us win the election.” But as far as Republicans taking the blame, I don’t see the logic.”
